It has been an incredible few weeks for the Southbridge Band program, and there will be a couple more filled with events.
On Saturday, May 14, the Southbridge High School Marching Band performed in the Southbridge Bicentennial Parade in the morning to an enthusiastic reception. Later that day, Nolan Bachand attended the Massachusetts Instrumental and Choral Conductors Association Solo and Ensemble contest, and received a silver medal for his performance of “After the Rain” on marimba. Pictured is Nolan with clinician Paul Pitts as they review some of his performance as part of the festival
Our ten seniors were honored in the annual Band Banquet on Monday, May 16. Pictured below are our Concert Band seniors with Dr. Garcia as they display their silver medal trophy won at the Fiesta Val competition earlier in April .Congratulations to Seniors Nitzmarie Cintron-Santos, Godsent Asante, Jamal Blyther, David Duval, Jessica Emery, Joanne Marcano, Carlos Nieves-Mojica, Analis Pagan, Cassandra St. Germaine and Mariana Valera.
On Sunday, May 22, one middle school band member and five high school band members participated in the Central Massachusetts Honors Youth Wind Ensemble under the direction of Dr. Bradley P. Ethington, Director of Bands at Syracuse University. Pictured below are Tyler Gonzalez,Rebecca Dillon, Rebekah Walker, Mackenzie Mercure, Marcus Gonzalez and Heriberto Cintron-Santos.
What’s more is the band still has three performances left until the end of the year! They include Memorial Day Parade and Ceremonies, May 30, Graduation June 3 and a “concert tour” performance at the Center of Hope on Friday, June 10. Add to that a final exam and working at the end-of-the-year activity fair and you have a very rigorous program that is a pillar of success for the Southbridge Public Schools!

On Saturday, April 30, two Southbridge band students participated in the 38th annual Massachusetts Lions Club All-State Band in Mansfield, MA. The 2:30 concert was conducted by Dr. Thomas Todd Anderson, Director of the 370-member UMass Amherst Minuteman Marching Band. Mackenzie Mercure, clarinet, and Aaron Berry, baritone saxophone, participated in an all-state honors band festival that ran from Wednesday through Saturday.
Selections the band performed included "Mayflower Overture" by Ron Nelson, "Shenandoah" by Frank Ticheli and "Stars and Stripes Forever" by John Philip Sousa. The band rehearsed over 8 hours a day from Wednesday through Saturday for the hour-long concert that included six band pieces in total. An honors jazz ensemble also shared the concert. The Southbridge Lions sponsored Aaron and nominated Mackenzie, who attended his second year in a row. When asked to describe their experience over the weekend, both students used terms like "amazing," "competitive," and "an experience you can't get in your home band." 54 honors musicians from 30 schools participated in this annual event.

On March 31st, all middle school
students were surprised with a
“You Matter” Anti-Bullying concert
performed by Season 13 American
Idol alumni, Casey McQuillen.
The “You Matter” Tour was an
hour-long interactive concert of
Casey’s songs and stories.
Throughout the performance, she
showed students how she grew
from an insecure middle schooler
to a 23 year-old aspiring pop star
who isn’t afraid to dream.
Additionally, Casey used her
journey on American Idol to
demonstrate the benefit of taking
risks, experiencing failure, and
determining your own definition
of success. She left the students
with the most important message
of all: You Matter!

SMHS SWAG NIGHT
Student Arts Festival at Southbridge Middle/High School an Overwhelming Success
The Students with Artistic Gifts Festival (“SWAG”) was well received for the second year in a row. Hosted by Southbridge Middle/High School’s Fine and Performing Arts Department, the festival featured fine and digital artwork, poetry, as well as chorus, band and theatrical performances from schools across the district. The annual festival, which took place Tuesday, March 8 from 4pm to 9pm, has replaced Music in the Round, which used to occur every other year, and only included music performances.
“Our students have many talents,” says Miriam Kranz, SMHS Theater Program Advisor. Dr. David Garcia, Fine and Performing Arts Department Head for Southbridge/Middle High School, agrees: “SWAG allows for more students to showcase their various talents because it’s inclusive of so many artistic genres. We hope to see the festival continue to expand from year to year.”
Feedback from parents and community members was overwhelmingly positive, and the attendance surpassed last year’s inaugural SWAG event.
Quotes from students:
Nitzmarie Cintron-Santos, senior, says “She really liked how they had different events like art and poetry at the same time.”
William Rodriguez-Otero, Jr., a freshman who had solos with both the concert band and jazz-rock ensemble said, “I thought all the musical groups sounded really good.”
"The Middle School and High School chorus was amazing. I loved the song choices." - Denver Grade 6
"It was so cool to see my art on Swag night!" - Adelina Grade 6
